Celebration of reading

On April 28, we celebrated all things books and reading at our Family Fun Literacy Night.

Special guests included firefighters from the Vancouver Fire Department and officers from the Vancouver Police Department, who were there to share some of their favorite books, as well as Councilmember Alishia Topper and representatives from the Clark County chapter of Altrusa International.

In addition, two Ogden Elementary teams displayed their knowledge in a practice round of the Battle of the Books.

Thanks to a grant from Altrusa, every child took home a free book that night. The grant also paid for Battle of the Books materials and additional books for students.

Said Mady Wilson, whose favorite book is Green Eggs and Ham, “I like to read books because they can entertain you and give you interesting facts.”

For Alina Onofrei of the Fantasy Wonders Battle of the Books team, reading is a priority. She reads at least two hours per day. “I have a busy schedule, but I still make time for the reading part,” she said.

LAP Reading Intervention Teacher Katie Lewis, who coordinated the event, stressed the importance of reading and writing both at and outside of Ogden. “Literacy in the home is important,” she said. “It supports what happens at school.”
